I’m skinny but I’ve seen the trailer of this and it makes wanna gain weight

The Whale is one of the most remarkable films in recent history. Brendan Fraser is the marvel all of the critics say - turning in one of the most deeply affecting portrayals I’ve ever seen. What’s more is that this isn’t your typical Aronofsky film. He doesn’t clobber you over the head with hyper-stimulatory imagery but rather allows the viewer to settle into the keenly nuanced scenes with delicacy. While many may criticize the multiple, concomitant messages the film purports to portray, I found solace believing that Aronofsky left the “message” ambiguous to allow the viewer to come to their own conclusions about the subject matter. I surely came to my own - somewhat contradictory - conclusions and hope that you, too, take the time to digest the endless layers of this artistic feat.

Really enjoyed this film. Acting was great. Characters were well developed. Enjoyed the realism.

Am i supposed to LIKE any of the characters? The ignorant christian is the only one worthy of pity, the daughter is a cold mess who will get less acting jobs just because this character is so annoying. The asian women friend is a cold B as well. Brendans character is just plain sad and i dont know why he puts up with them. Daren just cant write women. Seriously look at all of his films and see how unrealistic or boring the females are

Being a larger person my whole life, then to lose 100lbs…totally get it. Incredible movie. Had me in tears.

What an amazing comeback for Brendan! This movie moved me emotionally and he totally deserved his Oscar for this. It was beautifully made and well written. Such an amazing film!

This is an incredible film. The writing and story structure is just poetic. Not particularly cinematic. But it’s not necessarily with something like this. The acting from Fraser, beyond earned that Oscar. The subject matter is heavy. And no that wasn’t a double entendre. However they never cross any lines with the depiction of a severely obese man. Just do it accurately…and sensitively. As is true of the handling of all the subject matter. A+

So glad Frazier is back! Good movie, sad story, but powerful nonetheless. Frazier is one of the best actors of our time. And better yet, a wonderful human. In fact, even if I’d not liked the movie, I’d have given it 5 stars still to support Frazier.

The movie is just plain bad. The writing contradicts itself and also repeats itself. It’s as if the actors forgot what they said in their previous line. The premise is ridiculous and is simply illogical. The acting by the ex-wife and daughter amounts to nothing more than shouting their lines in quick bursts. The story can’t seem to decide why the father has been estranged from his daughter and is not even close to how child custody works. The big reveal when he shows his face to his students (via Zoom) is also dumb. What college would let a professor teach with their camera off/broken? Then, when the camera is on and his students see he face for the first time, he pans his camera and shows them his entire body and swollen feet; ya know, that thing that all professors do! Why this film received the accolades it did is beyond me.
