Description

From Michel Gondry, the innovative director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Science of Sleep, comes this unique animated documentary on the life of controversial MIT professor, philosopher, linguist, anti-war activist and political firebrand Noam Chomsky. Through complex, lively conversations with Chomsky and brilliant illustrations by Gondry himself, the film reveals the life and work of the father of modern linguistics while also exploring his theories on the emergence of language. The result is not only a dazzling, vital portrait of one of the foremost thinkers of modern times, but also a beautifully animated work of art.

The movie is just as much about Chomsky’s inspiring life and work as it is about Gondry’s nervous desire to do it justice. The result is an entertaining, warming, and informative film — the best I have seen in quite a while.

Gondry was able to get some real gems out of Chomsky. What an amazing interview and animation of their conversation. The price was well worth it and I would highly recommend this beautiful piece to anyone who is interested in Noam Chomsky and or linguistics and cognitive science. I really enjoyed the animation and the sound track that went along with it. 5 stars!

I was not impressed with this and feel cheated out of the rental fee. Not knowing entirely what to expect, I had hoped to leave the experience richer and grow my understanding on thought and linguistics. I found the animations childish and was not able to relate to the film. The few times my interest was peaked was for the actual live footage. Most of it was random and skipped around making it difficult to follow. I would not recommend this one.

The film goes between Chomsky's life and ideas randomly and is hard to follow. But, it still is nice to get a glimpse into the mind of someone like Noam Chomsky. The animation is hand drawn and helps to convey the conversation some of the time, but mostly, it is artistic flare.

Superficial, disorganized discussion. No focus, just a scattershot of what would be the first 5 minutes of a university lecture on topics such as language, identity, epistemology, etc. Ask anyone who has given this a positive review to expound upon anything in here and I'm sure you will receive lots of stuttering faltering non-words: 1) Because it's elevated, but 2) Because explanations and investigations are so paltry as to provide unthinking lemmings with very little to regurgitate. Also, a majority of the animation is rather poor and does little to articulate beyond what is achieved already by words alone. I only give it two stars because a few questions Chomsky raised initiated me to pause the movie and ponder for a few minutes.

This is lovely, profound work -- done with great sensitivity. It's bursting with life and curiosity. Worth watching many times.
