Description

"The Science of Sleep," a playful romantic fantasy set inside the topsy-turvy brain of Stephane Miroux (Gael Garcia Bernal) an eccentric young man whose dreams constantly invade his waking life. While slumbering, he is the charismatic host of "Stephane TV," expounding on "The Science of Sleep" in front of cardboard cameras. In "real life," he has a boring job at a Parisian calendar publisher and pines for Stephanie (Charlotte Gainsbourg), the girl in the apartment across the hall. While Stephanie is initially charmed by Stephane, she is confused by his childishness and shaky connection to reality. Stephanes co-worker, Guy (Alain Chabat) a vulgar but practical man, offers advice on the opposite sex, but Stephane is too far in the clouds to listen. Unable to find the secret to Stephanies heart while awake, Stephane searches for the answer in his dreams.

A confusing but thought provoking masterpiece the whole way through.

The excerpt and reviews will tell you the guts of this fantasy. You will either love it for its originality, insight, courageous expression and beauty, or you will hate it because it is foreign and bizarre and unstructured and unpredictable (and because it has some subtitles...). I very much enjoyed it. The various use of language and subtitles, the childlike combination of complexity and simplicity that accompanies dreaming, the reckless abandon of typical plot structures, the obvious hard work on special effects and set, all won over my heart. This is a movie for the impressionist or perhaps the surrealist--From which of these periods would your dreams come? Anyway... A pleasant surprise for the one who is prepared to enter its dream state; a vulgar eccentricity for those who expect their movie experience to fit into accepted genre or plot parameters.

This movie is fantastic! I've been itching to see it for months and it was not a dissapointment. My sister saw this movie a couple of weeks ago and deemed it "Absolutely Terrible!" She claims that the acid trippy feeling of this movie lasted to long and it bugged her, but from a guy who lives this movie, breaths this movie and is the perfect puzzle piece to this movie, take my advice and buy it! Regardless of cost.

This movie is a head trip! But soooo wonderful!! Great chemistry between the two characters and the animation throughout the movie is awesome too. My boyfriend didn't like it because of the captions and he thought it was just weird. :-) Too each their own I suppose, I would recommend it though!!

This is a beautiful love story about a schizephrenic who finds true love with the girl next door. I highly recommend it. One of my all time favorties! But you need a certain appreciation for the strange to truly enjoy this movie.

Science of Sleep exceeded my expectations, Gael GarcĂa Bernal is perfect as Stephane, a modern day Quixote. The dream sequences are absoultley beautiful, you find yourself wishing you could be in Stephanes head, in his magical dream world. I recommend this movie to anyone who has ever dared to dream, and who has ever chased the impossible.
