Description

Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning star in Academy Award winner Sofia Coppola's witty and moving story about the special bond between a father and his daughter. Actor Johnny Marco (Dorff) is leading the fast-paced lifestyle of a tabloid celebrity. He’s comfortably numb with his life of women and pills when his 11-year-old daughter, Cleo (Fanning), unexpectedly arrives at his room at Hollywood’s legendary Chateau Marmont hotel. Their time together encourages Johnny to re-question his life in ways he never expected.

My motivation behind watching this was my love affair with L. A. (as an East Coaster, she has been my mistress for 30 years) and my obsession with the Chateau Marmont. My second confession is that I am employed as a Data Scientist (nerd by profession), but have a love for screenplays (artist at heart). So, observation #1: this movie definitely does not follow the typical and expected format of Setup, Conflict, Resolution. It's actually kind of meandering (as is real life?). Observsation #2: there's not as much dialogue compared to moments without. Not that that's a bad thing I guess? Having said all that... What this is, is a story about anyone of us who has tried to balance careers, ambition, obligations, against giving time to those we love. I spent the first 45 minutes thinking, what the hell is the point of this, to the last 45 minutes, crying on and off. Which is all to say, if Terminator II is your idea of high cinema, you're going to think this is terrible. But if you're a student or fan of art, I would say stick it out; it's worth muddling through. :-)

I wanted to like it. I did. The chateau marmont as a background? So much could be done with that. It wasn’t an art film. It didn’t have a plot line. Any character development is minimal. There is no bond with Johnny (the main character). Would have been a more interesting film if told from his daughter Cleo’s perspective. Would have been more interesting if told by the friend staying in their house. Hell, anything would have been more interesting. I don’t know. I can’t really summarize why it didn’t work. I’m not mad I spent the money, I don’t technically “hate” the film but anything above 1 star would be too generous. Elle fanning is great. All other actors were very forgettable to me. Especially Johnny. Just bad.

I have a feeling that Sofia Coppola spent much of her early years growing up in hotels.

Fantastic movie about the existential crisis of life and fame. Coppola is a master film maker, mature, insightful, and creative. The movie has an incredibly satisfying conclusion, and the build up to it is executed perfectly.
  • Who financed this load of crap?

This has got to be, without a doubt, the worst movie ever made. Just because your dad is an architect that doesn't make you one. I think that´s the case with mrs. Sofia Coppola. This movie looks like it was shot using a handy cam and written by the most boring writer in the world.
  • Surprisingly bad

Give me some of what S Coppola is on... Goes nowhere on purpose which gets annoying right away.

This is the worst movie I've ever watched. It seriously gave me a headache trying to finish the whole thing. There is no point, nothing happens at all! I usually love Sophias work :/
