Description

This is a remarkably revealing documentary about Robert Crumb, the creator of such underground comics as "Fritz the Cat." Director Terry Zwigoff, an old friend and colleague, links the hilariously rendered and rather peculiar obsessions of Crumb's graphic work to the artist's fantastically dysfunctional family.

He let his Shadow out of the dark places and allowed it roam on the pages of his sadistic and beautifully creative mad genius drawings he ejaculated from his pen.

Whenever I want to be artistically inspired I will watch this magnificent documentary, which I would place very high on my list of All-Time Favorite Films. I saw this when it was released at a small local art theater and was absolutely blown away by it. I had been a modest fan of Robert Crumb for a number of years but this elevated my opinion tenfold. Even if you disagree with his feelings towards women, culture, etc., one has to agree that his artististic abilities are amazing. I highly recommend checking out the notbooks of his artwork that have been published which of every day items and see the beauty that flows out og his pain. It is unfortunate that Crumb's sisters refused to participate in the docuentary because I think their perspective would added another dimension to the brothers Crumb. It had to have been a very, very strange family life. But Crumb has fled this country. America's loss is France's again. We just don't know what to do with mad dreamers who refuse to conform to cultural pressures.

I just rented this movie, and I may eventually buy it. A wild climb thru Robert Crumbs bizarre family tree! I can't believe his brother Charles committed suicide before ever having an opportunity to experience sex. I think the brothers had a certain degree of genius, but it was never allowed to grow thanks to their father. I wish there was more info about Robert's son Jesse. He seems like a loving soul that didn't get enough love from his Dad. But I don't blame Robert moving from America to France; enjoy the remainder of your days Mr Crumb. Drink some fine French wine and enjoy a fat blunt!

They say that many artist have a dysfuntional inner self that makes their work special. This is a film that I just selected because I wanted to watch something new and different, something beyond what I knew about. I'm not really into the comic world but this film is well written, so you understand where its coming from and Crumbs background and how his personal life influenced his comic book graphics. An excellent documentary.

If you were ever curious about the "keep on truckin'" comic creator, then this film is a must see. It's a video coffee table book and real life observation of a family that seems to get stranger by the day.
