Description

CALL ME LUCKY tells the story of Barry Crimmins, a politically outspoken and whip-smart comic whose efforts in the 70s and 80s fostered the talents of the next generation of standup comedians. But beneath Crimmins’ gruff, hard-drinking, curmudgeonly persona lay an undercurrent of rage stemming from his long-suppressed and horrific abuse as a child – a rage that eventually found its way out of the comedy clubs and television shows and into the political arena. Featuring intimate interviews with both comedians and activists alike, director Bobcat Goldthwait’s (World’s Greatest Dad, God Bless America) CALL ME LUCKY is an inspiring, triumphant and wickedly funny portrait of one of comedy’s most enigmatic and important figures.

I will admit that I have been a big Bobcat fan going back as far as the good ol’ days when Scott Baio was the antichrist. While in his past films you could see the beating heart beneath the occasional shocking set up, this movie is all heart (but not without it’s own horrifying, albeit true, moments). Beautifully shot and edited, his love for his mentor shines through in every frame. A truly great documentary about a wise, funny and troubled man.

Bobcat Goldthwait’s documentary about comedian and human rights activist, Barry Crimmins, is like a blunt wake-up call. I was completely unaware of Crimmins and the vital role he has played in fighting to save children and to encourage survivors of childhood sexual abuse to speak out and seek help. This is one comic who has a full-on duty to be angry. To state that he is “brave” is an understatement. He has and continues to take on politicians, The Vatican, hypocrisy and the audience if required. Crimmins is anything but “crazy” — he is a very sane hero. Bobcat Goldthwait has long had my admiration, but this is an assured and fantastic use of his credit and talent in bringing this amazing man and his mission to a wider audience. A must see, but it is disturbing. It needs to be. As for the Washington Post review. Ignore it.
