Reality

I can see why a lot of people may not like this film. It strongly diverges from the norms of Hollywood cinema. It's very different, and lacks what most typical films rely on as far as story and structure go. It's a brave film. Not because of content, but because of lack of content. Because it breaks rules of editing, structure, and cinematography - with purpose. While it is certainly confusing and at times frustrating, it makes for an unforgettable experience that takes advantage of all the medium of film has to offer. There are some absolutely genius moments of cinema in this film. Expect broken chronology, multiple interwoven story lines, and classic French situational humor. If you appreciate narrative experimentalism and dream logic, then this film is for you. Dupieux effectively makes us question what we see and what we believe, and regardless of whether or not you end up enjoying it, you'll certainly be talking about it long after it's over.

It doesn't matter what the people in the movie say, 'cause there's no subtitles and they're all just sittin' there. And they know they're bein' watched on a videotape that a little girl found in a pig. The French guy squeals a lot into his tape recorder. I don't recall the pig making any noise.

we-ell, you know... What starts out as an intruiging strand of narratives ends up, in a very French way, as an unresolved collection of unfinished thoughts. The viewer is left hoping that somehow there is some very clever undiscovered plot element they have missed which will somehow bring it all back together in the end. Alas, the film just peters out. The editing and the Hollywood satire elements are good for the occasional laugh and sparkle but not enough to keep you engaged throughout the film. At the end you just envy the film-making hippie who falls asleep while filming a girl who can't fall asleep... how clever. how dull.
