The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

The Hobbit was one book and at most should have maxed at two movies. Greed won out and instead of a pair of exciting movies that might have rivaled the Lord of the Rings trilogy in entertainment, we have the overuse of CGI, an over-extended, bloated, and at times painfully slow trilogy of movies that reached their height here, in the extended version.

“Biology-Affirming” does not quite translate as “Life-Affirming”. These stories, heavily steeped in warfare, thus cannot be woven or presented as featuring only sugar and stardust and unicorns; there will have to be some grit and fire here; however, I find that I most object to — within the three Hobbit Films (either Version), just as in many recent films elsewhere plagued by this hubris — such Very Low “humor” as is unnecessary, hence intrusive, but is nonetheless forced in (if it requireth a crowbar) for the sake of . . . how lovely . . . branding something as a Family Film For All! Live and let live; let some generally inane film appeal to its given audience; allow Tolkienesque films to breathe and glow steadily. The casting and acting for Gandalf, Bilbo, and Friends? Sublime. The treatment of Bilbo’s pity for Gollum is no less than celestial; such respect for kindness is crucial to Tolkien Books AND Films. That said, the ambitious expansion here (as from the 1937 novel and in either version of the films) was rather well done, it seems to me, if such a large expansion were to occur; there IS a LOT of battle, battle, battle (not quite Tolkien’s raison d’être); ultimately — conveying all the while a smaller story or “chapter” than did, after all, permit the very scope of the Lord of the Rings films — the Hobbit films reached reasonably well their equivalent of the more massive films’ massive quality . . . hence four stars for me. I spent the whole movie wondering why this or that was happening because its not how the story goes. Jackson did sich a great jon on The Lord of The Rings but is very heavy handed and untrue to the story I love. It is LOOSELY based on The Hobbit. If you are a fan at all I would recommend skipping this. Major plot points and events are changed. I just could not get into it or suspend my disbelief because nothing seemed to coincide with the story that we all know.

This one is beyond compare. Everything about this movie is great-plot,acting,directing and effects. I have to admit if there was a dragon it had to be like Smaug.Any other dragons are like worms in front of Smaug.The most incredible creature that I've seen in any movie . Peter Jackson knows what he does. He knows how to bring creatures to live like they've been a part of our history. Thank you for this incredible movie I've watched this for many times and I'll watch it all over again .

I loved watching the first one with all the extras since I love to learn more about ok how it was made and things like that and this one doesn't change my mind, still great! My favorite hobbit is the second so I am pleased with this purchase! 😊😊😊😀😀😀👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
