Description

The definitive documentary about the beloved and influential 70s rock band Big Star. Together less than four years, the band flirted with mainstream success but never achieved it. Nonetheless, they produced a body of work of seminal importance to pop and alternative music, influencing major artists like REM, The Replacements, Elliot Smith, Beck, The Flaming Lips and countless others.

Leaving aside the brilliance of Big Star's music, this is an extremely well-crafted documentary. A very impressive piece of filmmaking -- entertaining, informative and moving throughout. Well done!

What a disappointment, especially with all the positive reviews. I am a BIg Star fan since the 80s when I was in college. There is ZERO new footage of the band, only the home movie released in the Thank You Friends video (used over and over again). A few cool visual effects at the beginning, but then tons of talking heads of people talking about the band that had minimal involvement. There is barely any audio/video of Alex Chilton or Chris Bell talking about their own band. Most of it is Jody Stephens, who is a great person and drummer but we've heard his story before. The movie is almost 2 hours long - could have been cut by half. The Big Star story is sad, of course, but this offers no real info or insight that fans didn't already know, and people not familiar with the band will get nothing from it. Listen to their albums instead.

Finally we have a documentary based upon one of the most overlooked yet influential rock bands of all time. The history of the band and how their framework has been woven into the History of Memphis Rock & Roll are moving and brilliant. Do not miss this film. Reverend Baker - Two Thumbs Up!

Very detailed and well made story of the band, the scene, the personalities and the back story and weirdness of all of it. I could not recommend this more.

I've been a fan of the band for a little over 10 years and waited for this documentary for the last three years. The title of this review says it all.

An excellent film about an amazing band with complex matters made clear. I enjoyed this movie and only wish there was an answer to the question, "why weren't they hugely successful."
  • An absolute masterpiece

It doesn't matter if you're familiar with the legendary rock group Big Star or not - This is a beautiful documentary chronicling the incredible and painful story of one of rock's greatest groups. A gorgeous ode to Alex Chilton and Chris Bell, two of music's most understated geniuses, and a perfect starting point for any new listener. What was done here is rare in music documentaries, and it should be seen by anyone and everyone. Thank you guys so much for this masterpiece! Long live Big Star!

Worth the price of admission for the music alone. The story is heartbreaking and well-told, the movie is uplifting at times, devastating at times, but the music is the star here. Big Star connected with people by making pain sound beautiful, and the movie succeeds in taking you inside that world. 5 stars.
