Hoop Dreams is the film that changed the way the Academy decided who got to compete in their documentary category. Its snubbing for having appeared on television first so outraged run-of-the-mill fans that there was no way to go back to business-as-usual. This is the movie that changed everything, and you owe it to yourself to watch it. Probably the first documentary to generate raves from everyone (instead of simply fans of documentaries) this movie moves people. Its story-telling is personal and at times painful but always true. The trust between the film-makers and the people they filmed for our benefit is palpable. The world Hoop Dreams exposes is immediately recognizable -- it's where we live. Do yourself a favor, WATCH THIS MOVIE!

My favorite quote from the movie, "People always say to me 'when you get to the NBA don't forget about me' Well, I should have said, 'if I don't make it to the NBA , don't you forget about me." - William Gates A must see film!
