  • Not a film that depicts the Civil War from the South’s perspective

I would appreciate a film that actually showed the South’s perspective during the Civil War. This one ain’t it, and is only worth watching only as a prime example of the South’s “The Lost Cause” narrative.
  • iTunes Extras and 4K needed

Awesome movie about the Battle of Gettysburg, but can you please add the Special Features and iTunes Extras and also upgrade to 4K so people can watch them online? Also, can you merge the theatrical and extended versions together in one set? This is really annoying to me when the Special Features appear on the Home Video releases of movies, but not on iTunes because technology is advancing everyday.
  • Every five minutes another boring soliquoy

This movie is full hour too long. Rather than showing what a brilliant general and tactician Jackson was, the most we see him trotting through the northern camp at Clarksville. We see various battle scenes with him off-camera. No genius, nothing stunning whatsoever. He comes off like some sort of adjutant rather than the explosive success that he really was. The film also makes him out like a saint, rather than an over-the-top religious fanatic who believed he was an avenging angel of God and who, despite his successes, was disliked by his men. Regardless... The thing that sinks this film (and the part that should have been reduced by at least ninety percent) is that, at the drop of a hat, nearly every character has to step up and make a meandering, expositional seven-minute speech - essentially lecturing the audience in an overblown and overwrought fashion, over and over again, as if we are a bunch of dullards. It seems like each actor might have thought their role was larger than it was because each of them have a hugely dramatic soliloquy (usually a movie only gets one of these, not eleven). After the first half dozen of these things, I started fast forwarding whenever I saw another one coming. This film is endurable but it fails in its mission. It shows us nothing of what made him Lee's right arm. And the endless overdone speeches are almost as out of control as the sister film, Gettysburg.
  • Disregard "Robby" - AMAZING!

Regarding "Robby143"'s review, please ignore it. This person is obviously someone who can't face the truth of what really occurred in the the Civil War. The South wasn't the "bad guys" in the conflict. They weren't just plain ole racists who did anything to keep racism alive. And if that's the ONLY subject you caught in 4 hours, then you may need to learn some more comprehension skills. Only a liberal idiot, who believes he's right about every social issue in the entire world, while everyone who is not a sheep liberal idiot is branded as evil and wrong in all fronts. Why is it that Conservatives can disagree with each other constantly without demeaning who they are as a person for their own PERSONAL views? Why do Liberals always have to act like they know all? Ugh I'm not gonna continue because I'll say something to get this review deleted by Apple (of course, an entirely Liberal company while ALSO using child slave workers to make their products in subhuman environments. Someone say "HYPOCRITES"?... shhh don't talk about that).
  • Learn your history America!

This is an accurate movie and I love it. Americans need to remember its history and honor it. And remember that both sides were the good guys in the civil war. Until Grant became leader of the Union army. Then the South became the good guys.

This movies is a revisionists version of a brief portion of the Civil War, but more than that it is nothing more than evangelical prostelizing supporting racism, slavery and silly bible beating. I'm embarassed thaat I wasted over 3 hours of my life hoping to find somee redeaming feature of this movie that is not so disappointing. On the bright side, I enjoyed the intermission and watcching the credits..
  • The Critics Are Stupid

Never mind those idiots. This is a wonderful movie. I once had it on CD-ROM, but it went bad. So I bought it here. Stonewall Jackson is shown as a human being who felt deeply about his relationship with God, and the issue of slavery. The movie also shows the reasons Abraham Lincoln was so distressed as it accurately portrays the terrible northern losses at Fredericksburg (thanks to Burnside) and Chancellorsville (thanks to Hooker). Both of these battles were touted as they were - tremendous southern victories. But then came Gettysburg and the long, downhill slide of the Army of Virginia. I would highly recommend the movie for learning the truth about the Civil War and those therein. It gives us more than just one lopsided view while portraying Jackson & Lee to be human beings. Highly flawed, but human nonetheless
  • Finally, A Deep Civil War Movie!

The movie's action may lack visceral impact but this movie is one that at least acknowledges that there were two partially correct sides to the war, which was not entirely based on slavery. I was very moved by the portrayals of Lee and Jackson. I recommend that you watch this movie if you have a decent amount of time available.

The Civil War was a devastating event in American history. Brothers literally fought brothers, facing one another across vicious fields of fire. "Gods And Generals" is not a defense of the south, but a picture in time of the view of the Confederate states. Yes, it's a very lengthy movie, as was its predecessor, "Gettysburg" - how can a story of that magnitude be told in 90 minutes? "Gods And Generals" humanizes those who fought for the South, especially General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. He was a man of genuine, if imperfect faith. One of the most moving scenes in the movie shows Jackson and his slave, Jim, in prayer. Is this a romantic view of the Civil War? Perhaps. But it succeeds in showing that men on both sides wrestled with their consciences, hopes, and dreams, and reveals them to be very, very human.
