Description

A mother's love can lead to murder! Joan Crawford delivers an Academy Award-winning performance as a woman clawing her way to success to provide her daughters with everything she lacks, a woman named Mildred Pierce. Dying of gunshot wounds, Monte Beragon (Zachary Scott) croaks the name "Mildred." The police believe he has named his murderer ... and Pierce confesses to the crime. Now, as her story unfolds, the police learn of a woman who divorces her philandering husband, takes a job as a waitress and does anything to achieve success--only to be betrayed by the daughter she adores.

I have read the book and have seen both versions of the film. I prefer the Joan Crawford version above all. The book is good drama but I liked the murder mystery angle in Joan's film version. Jack Carson is one of the few actors who can combine drama and humor in his character, Wally. Eve Arden was, as always, the strong female sidekick. Zachary Scott played Monte very well and Ann Blyth was perfect as the scheming Veda. If nothing, else watch this movie for how good writing and direction can change a book but still be a great story.

The actors in the classic film, manage to convey in an hour and a half what it took +8 hours in the HBO series. And what actor could compare wits with Eve Arden? Her one-liners alone are worth the price of the movie!
  • The HBO series doesnt come close

Although a new HBO mini-series of this book is coming out soon, I still think this is the ULTIMATE classic! Great performances by one and all; perhaps just a touch of melodrama at times, but this is a MUST see! Buy it, rent it, you won't be sorry!
