Description

In his highly acclaimed novel Never Let Me Go, Kazuo Ishiguro (The Remains of the Day) created a remarkable story of love, loss and hidden truths. Kathy (Oscar® nominee Carey Mulligan, An Education), Tommy (Andrew Garfield, The Social Network) and Ruth (Oscar® nominee Keira Knightley, Pride & Prejudice, Atonement) live in a world and a time that feel familiar to us, but are not quite like anything we know. They spend their childhood at Hailsham, a seemingly idyllic English boarding school. When they leave the shelter of the school and the terrible truth of their fate is revealed to them, they must also confront the deep feelings of love, jealousy and betrayal that threaten to pull them apart.

The writer of this story and Hollywood should be put in prison for doing a movie with such HORRIFIC idealistic concepts that children are raised as f'ing cattle!!! ABSOLUTELY DISPICABLE STORY LINE AND MOVIE!!

I bought this on a whim in 2010 while at boarding school, and it did not disappoint. Great acting, though Keira Knightley was surprisingly obnoxious. This is a movie that will leave you thinking, really wonderful film.
  • The book was MUCH better

Seeing the movie adaptation after reading the book sort of spoiled the story for me. I felt that the producers left out so much integral information and emotion and because of this, I couldn’t feel as much of a connection to the characters. What makes the book so wonderful is that for about 200 pages, we see that these students are not at all different from “actual humans”. This is what makes the book so meaningful and makes the ending that much more moving and intimate - we are shocked that anyone would consider them as sub-human; we’ve had 200 pages of raw emotion, empathetic experience, an illustration of the human condition! But the movie didn’t convey much humanity at all…instead, the characters felt melancholy and disconnected, as if everything were rehearsed. I personally could not establish a bond to the characters and this could have been fixed if there was maybe more background or at least more explanation. There were parts of the story that I would have missed if I hadn’t read the book. Don’t watch the movie, it will minimize the power of the novel.

the story itself will always be my favorite, and after reading the book, i decided to give the movie a try. i did not expect it to be nearly as beautiful, but it came quite close. movies always fall short, but i personally believe this is one of the best movie renditions of a book since of mice and men and 1984 (neither of which lived up to the brilliance of the novels themselves). even if you have not read it, this movie is a must see. this movie affirms the real values in life and i will be keeping it on my top ten movies list for a long time (because i don’t know how many movies could top it).

This movie was a fragmented mess. Vastly unbelievable that none of these "poor creatures" would actively try to subvert the system? They want freedom but resolve to obey their eugenic-minded masters like good little slaves? That seemed highly disingenuous. I expected to reach a point in this film where I'd have true empathy for the characters, but their lack of own passion to survive at any cost left me cold and void when it ended. Sad, depressing and poorly structured.

I read this book a little while ago and loved it. I couldn't put it down. And when I finished reading it, I wanted to watch the movie. The cinematography was great. The setting of the English countryside was great for the dreary storyline. But if you don't want to see an excellent novel brutally murdered on screen, then don't see the movie.

Beautifully made movie of the novel by the same name. A gut-wrenchingly beautiful story of love and loss.
