Loved the movie, and the movie lead me to the book which was another blessing. The music from the film by Jack Nitzsche is exhilarating and transformative. I hope iTunes will make an effort to make this available for download.

On the bright side Teresa Russell is incredible as Sophie and you see what Bill Murray will become as an actor. I wonder if he, or the studio didn't trust his skills enough to leave out the slapstick. When he's still, he's great. Horrible casting of Isabel and Gray. She's wasn't near pretty or nuanced enough. And I thought the physicality of Gray was missing in the actor who played him.

I so much wanted to like this movie, but I was tremendously disappointed. Other than a great performance by Teresa Russell and some nice footage of Murray in Tibet, there's not much to recommend it. The worst part is, they took out the character of Somerset Maugham, the writer, and actually show Bill Murray burning a book! All to give us more dopey closeups of Murray before he learned to act. Rent the original, with Tyrone Power and Gene Tierney, if you want to see a really good film. And do read Maugham's book, it's a masterpiece. It was a stretch for Murray to make this when he did, and I applaud the effort, but not the outcome.
  • Misses the spirit of Maugham's novel

This is an interesting and earnest attempt, but ultimately it's unsatisfying and somewhat confusing as Bill Murray tries to incorporate his trademark funny business in to a story of spiritual awakening. I'm a bit mystified why Murray thought this would be a good project for him since he doesn't ever seem interested in portraying someone who's experienced significant change. And that's ultimately, for me, what makes the film a failure--it seems implausible that the characters who surround Murray's Larry Darrell would respond to him in the way that they do. In other words, their motivation, as well as Murray's, feels insincere throughout.

I've seen this movie a few times through the years and would like to buy it. It is exceptionally well-made. Bill Murray (and Theresa Russell) are wonderful in this movie. I don't rent so still waiting to see again.
