Description

Academy Award-winner Javier Bardem ("No Country for Old Men," "The Sea Inside") stars and was nominated for an Academy Award and Golden Globe for his performance as the Cuban poet and novelist, Reynaldo Arenas, who was singled out by his teachers and encouraged to further his skills as a writer no easy task, considering the Castro regime's censorship of any work considered to be subversive or anti-authoritarian. Still, the author manages to smuggle his work out of the country through friends, who arrange for one of his novels to be published in France. Not only persecuted for his creative beliefs, the openly gay Arenas is jailed on a bogus sex charge; he escapes internment only to be captured and persecuted later for his contraband dispatches. In 1980, Arenas is finally allowed to leave Cuba for the United States, where he achieves freedom of expression. Also starring Academy Award-nominee and Golden Globe-winner Johnny Depp ("Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise).

Beautiful film, but rent it elsewhere. The iTunes’ version doesn’t have subtitles and half the movie is in Spanish. Such a shame that iTunes doesn’t fix this issue, I should have read these comments before renting. This bad rating is for the iTunes version, not for the actual film.

Wish I had read the reviews before purchasing this movie for myself and my family since there are no subtitles. iTunes should add subtitles or warn people that there are none. This definitely decreased my enjoyment of the movie and resulted in a 2 star rating.

Some fairly substantial portions of the film are in Spanish with no subtitles or translation. iTunes ought to at least warn you of this since it does result in important parts of the film being meaningless for that small segment of the American public that still functions in English.

Confusing with both Spanish and English w/o subtitles from time to time. More about the gay drama then the true gift of the artist.
  • Amazing Bardem!

That's the first time I saw Bardem and it was magical. The movie is full of wonderful actors but Bardem definitely steals the spotlight! He oozes charisma and is incredibly believable as the homosexual Cuban poet that falls victim of Castro's anti-homosexual politics. A must-see for those interested in the Cuban regime and for all Bardem lovers!
