Description

Set in 19th century France, IFC's indie period piece, THE LAST MISTRESS chronicles the love affair between tempestuous Spanish mistress Vellini (Asia Argento) and distinguished, well-bred Ryno de Marigny (Fu'ad Ait Aattou). Ryno's attempt to remain faithful to his wife Hermangarde, a highly regarded young woman of the French aristocracy, profoundly fails as Vellini reappears in Ryno's life, offering him the passion and emotional connection he lacks in his marriage. His reluctant obsession with Vellini eventually overtakes his conscience, as he succumbs to the deceitful path of infidelity.

Breillat continues the longstanding French tradition of talking the audience to death. Talking heads, narration and pedantic analysis trump the visual depiction of the story. Even what should be a passionate, sexy, tragic story is turned into a boring and laborious diatribe. This is yet another reason that I dislike most French films. Can't believe I was lured in again.

This movie is emotionally provoking. It makes you feel, think, and relive an era. It isn't for the movie goers that want to see the mainstream happy ending. But for something real, passionate, and heart wrenching, you got it in this movie. A definite movie for those looking for something different from mainstream romance movies. I just viewed this movie, and I can't avoid the passion and pain this movie brings out. My heart is still pounding from the conclusion of each character's fate. Incredible. I am never disappointed by French films. Always something new and different.
  • Love is not always beautiful...

This movie was visually stunning, the scenes, the sets the costumes were all magnificent. But, it is the underlying theme of this movie that made it a treasure! The movie's script, and sometimes brash scenes, describe the essence of true love over the journey of a decade. True love isn't always beautiful, it gets messy, but it remains forever constant. Bravo!

I love this movie, because it was so real. It wasn't a perfect love story, it was what REALLY happens in relationships. This is what real love is like. You can't help who you love, you can't help who you're attracted to. Love isn't something that's easy or perfect. It can be messy. It's hard at times. People get hurt. I was really impacted and inspired by this movie. I wasn't surprised to see that someone else said they couldn't stop thinking about it. I couldn't either. That's how unforgettable this movie was for me. It's beautiful, the acting is phenomenal, not to mention that Ryno is easy to watch because he's so handsome! I love it. It's a classic in my collection of movies. I reminds me that the true love stories, the ones that aren't candy-coated are the best. This is a romance for adults. Just a head's up, there are some seriously steamy sex-scenes in this movie.
  • A bold period piece.

I've always admired Catherine Breillart as a singular female voice in cinema, but I usually like her ideas and perspective, more than her actual films. What she has created here is a masterful tale of manipulation, passion, aging, power struggles, and yes, sex--all wrapped up in a French period piece. Jane Austen this is not. Asia Argento, hitherto known to most as a film brat, is incredible here. She has matured from an awkard teen actress to a mature, nuanced woman (see "Boarding Gate" and "The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things.")

What a bad movie! Bad story, bad performances, cheap production. Bad taste in idea, art direction and actors direction. What a waste!

this movie i thought was absolutely amazing. i couldn't stop thinking about it for the next few days after i saw. i would definetly say it's worth the 2.99 to rent the story is gripping and the actors perform phenomenally. the sex scenes are bit in your face but the dialogue that occurs during them is vital to the story. in summation i would say that this is movie is inspiring, and beautiful.
