If I could give it 10 stars, I would. James Dean was phenomenal in this. And as a huge Dean fan myself, I am 100% certain in my opinion this was his best role. The plot, the cast, the acting is all 10/10.

Just re-read the book - - - loved it so I wanted to see the movie I had heard so much about. The movie does not do justice to the book, but James Dean was awesome. Worth watching just to see him act.

This has literally every single aspect perfectly made. The whole movie is shown in a view of a helpless teenager who has to find himself. Very few movies like this, and this a must-see film.

Why is this NOT AVAILABLE for purchase - so everyone can continue renting every time they would like to watch the movie? Over the course of years, customers will spend more renting through iTunes than buying! Thanks Apple. Keep steaming forward.

I've read every novel Steinbeck published, but never did East of Eden stand out among them the way it did after seeing this movie, which I've just seen for the first time, 56 years after it was made. As the movie progressed, I was captivated by James Dean's performance. It completely transformed the movie and the story, too. While all the acting was good for the time, I did a thought experiment: I replaced Dean with another actor like his costars on this movie. It became apparent that without Dean's energy, even with the fine performances of the others, the movie would have been just another drama from the 1950s. With Dean, it becomes one of the greatest films ever made. I think I'm not alone in that assessment. The scenery is wonderful; the wide screen makes it moreso. The directing was sensitive, and it was obvious that the director did everything he could to capture Dean at work. It does not feel like a studio film, but a location film, and the locations are believable. The screenplay is excellent. The music is of its time, a style that seems somehow misguided now, but that's not significant. It works. Being kind of indifferent to actors in general, especially those who have been overhyped, I've only now come to realize that Dean was as good as the hype. It's tragic that he had to leave us so soon. Three movies; three home runs. At least his memory will be only of his best work, as everything he did was great. But East of Eden is easily the best of his best. This review should be about the movie more than one actor in it, for it deserves its position in the pantheon of great movies for many reasons, but like the keystone in an incredible archway over a green valley, Dean is the one piece that holds up the entire work and enables the movie to shine in all its glory.
