Nicole Kidman's acting is actually brilliant. But the rest of the film is simply stupid. There is practically no conversation between the boy and Nicole, yet she falls for this story of reincarnation of some sort. They all seem perplexed. All the adults. On the basis of very little. Yet so few questions are asked. Like how and when did this happen? The film has little material - just the idea and that's it. And we're supposed to take this film seriously? A total waste of time I'm afraid.

Everything about this movie is simply perfect: the story is worthy of a space in the canon of American Literature; the entire cast delivers performances that are no less than phenomenal; and the score is so gorgeous it will haunt you. Without films this good, there would be no way of knowing what a mediocre film looks like.

One of the best films I have ever seen. Unbelievable performances of tremendous subtlety. Highly original script, very disquieting and affecting. Kidman's performance is particularly surprising. Not one false note.

The movie is intriguing while being somewhat ponderous. If the close ups of people in pregnant pauses were shortened by half it would cut about 15 minutes out of the movie. There is more than just the linear narrative going on and that's mainly because the film provokes the viewer to examine their emotions and responses to the topic. But it's rather tenuous and by the end I was thinking "That's it?"
