Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds, Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine... for the life of me I cannot tell how anyone can call this a comedy. It offers a microcosmic view of Hollywood life, I suppose, as well as insight into that particular mother-daughter relationship, but it's far from comedy. More of a drama, I guess. So much of the film is simply sad. There are a few comic scenes, but not many. Most of it is simply what it is...the story of a difficult life and an adult's difficult way of dealing with that life. It may be honest, it may be well-written, the acting is well done, but it's not funny.

pair now together in Heaven remembered on this earth for their talents and their undeniable love for one another. I pray for their family and close friends. What a year of loss 2016 has been. Please God, let 2017 show hope for ALL of humanity. Postcards from the Edge was indeed bittersweet and a real tribute of Carrie's journey in the shadow of being a child born into the spotlight of fame; this in a time when the Internet and it's trolls could not tarnish them and yet still a journey worthy of the written word and the cinematic screen. Reynolds and her daughter Fisher forever Hollywood royalty. Rest in Peace, Amen!

This is a brilliant movie. The acting is superb and appropriately OTT. The cameos are subtle and not shoved at you. Shirley does a great Debbie Reynolds without actually imitating her. Meryl, as always, is the consummate actress. Mike Nichols- hello...brilliant...the opening take in a one shot is F-ing incredible. I tunes: please let me buy this movie!
  • Worth renting just for Meryl Streep's musical number at the end

The main character is about an actress who is a pill popping star searching for love,in the wrong places. She has a mothe who pushed her buttons, yet we see the love between them.Meryl Streep is the actress and her mother is played by Shirley MacLaine who is suppose to be based on the actress Debbie Reynolds and Streeps character based on the actress Carrie Fisher of Star Wars fame. I suppose this movie is a dramedy.part drama and comedy. This is one of my favorite films.Streep was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in this movie. Postcards From The Edge has been for rent on itunes forever. When can I buy it on itunes???!!! Its so frustrating not to be able to put this on my video ipod permanently !!!

This movie is based on the book of the same name, which was loosely based on the life of Carrie Fisher (daughter of Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds). Not only is it an entertaining story with little glimpses of old and new behind-the-scenes Hollywood, which is enjoyable enough, but it's also so well written, directed and acted. Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine are just amazingly good actors, and Mike Nichols is a great director - so it's hardly surprising that the movie worked. But Carrie Fisher's life story, and her humorous retelling of it is what makes this movie great. I highly recommend it.
