Description

Tom Selleck portrays Quigley, an American cowboy who is lured to the Austrailian outback (of the 1860's) by an offer from a powerful sheep rancher/land baron (Alan Rickman) to use his sharpshooter skills to shoot troublesome dingoes. What Quigley finds out when he arrives is that Rickman really wants to use his skills to help wipe out the native Aborigine population as part of the country's "pacification by force." A man of moral integrity, Quigley strongly declines this murderous duty and throws his new boss through the window, so... now it's war between them. Also confusing the situation (as well as enlivening it) is a somewhat deranged "trallop" (Laura San Giacomo) who erroneously thinks Quigley is her husband.

When watching this movie, Tom Selleck's performance took me back to that of the Duke in his many Western roles. The movie is beautifully shot and very well acted in the classic western dramatic style.

Tom Selleck’s performance as the understated American cowboy who travels to Australia is great. Playing a rugged, decent American who passes up the chance to make a lot of money killing Australian aborigines, Selleck is very convincing. Alan Rickman also does a convincing job playing the Australian ranch owner who hires Selleck. Few could probably do as good of a job playing the obsessive rancher. I wasn’t convinced by Laura San Giacomo who played the part of “Crazy Cora,” but her performance didn’t harm the film overall.

Takes place in Australia, but it’s definitely of the Western genre. Amazing move and certainly an under-rated one. It came out just a few years before CGI came into use, so it has a very really and authentic feel. The HD version here on iTunes is good quality, and the movie has an overall good ‘film grain’ to it which fits the movie well. If you’ve never seen it, see it now!

My best friend and I were among many given free tickets at the cinema, probably in the hopes that it would generate good word-of-mouth. We laughed at the title and the star but quickly changed our minds because it was awesome! Everyone I know that’s seen it feels the same—I don’t know anyone who expected it to be this good but everyone loves it.

Depsite the deriviative plot (i.e. White Guy saves the "noble savages" from other white guys, laconic American is 10x better at everything than the uncouth Australians and the pompous brits) the film is entertaining, if for no other reason than Selelcks understated performance coupled with Alan Rickman being Alan Rickman (Which is a good thing). My one complaint is that Laura San Giacomo handles the "Crazy Cora" parts well, but just doesn't pull off the "sympathetic Cora" parts with the same believability. Still, it's a fun picture to watch despite it's flaws.
