Description

Warren Beatty and Annette Bening star in the incredible true story of Benjamin Bugsy Siegel, the playboy gangster who betrayed the Mob for love. A cold-blooded killer who dreamed of Hollywood stardom, a crazed patriot who plotted against Mussolini, and the brilliant visionary who carved Las Vegas out of the dry Nevada desert, Bugsy had it all. Until he fell for the one woman who wanted more. A critical masterpiece, BUGSY is a remarkable collaboration of Hollywood's best: director Barry Levinson, screenwriter James Toback, and an all-star supporting cast that includes Harvey Keitel, Oscar(r)-winner Ben Kingsley (Best Actor, Gandhi,1982), Joe Mantegna, and Elliott Gould. But at the center of itall is the white-hot romance between Bugsy and the insatiable starlet, Virginia Hill.

This film not only does an excellent job of telling the story of Bugsy Siegel and Virgina Hill- it is one of those rare films that actually captures the feel of the period-the glamour of old Hollywood comes to life again.
  • Love? What a joke.

If you know anything about Bugsy Siegal's real life, this is not it. He did not betray the mob for LOVE, more like greed. This flick is alright, not best picture worthy though.

Its an excellent film that would have been best picture had it not gone up against Silence of The Lambs. The story takes true life crime figures and romanticizes their lives, something typical of hollywood, but the struggles are sincere and so well acted that you wind up cheering for the gangsta. Its not unlike today. It boast a first rate acting emsemble that makes it worth a look at a world different than ours yet the same.

i thought this was an excellent film. the acting is fantastic, and based on what i've read of Siegel's life i'd say the movie is quite historically accurate as well (right down to Siegel's houndstooth sport jacket) and doesn't stoop to Hollywood sensationalism (Siegel's story doesn't need sensationalizing anyway). don't pay any attention to the marketing crap that makes it sound like Virginia Hill was Siegel's primary motivation for his actions (other than his divorce from his wife Esta); nothing i've read about Siegel has indicated to me that that was the case, and the movie doesn't make it seem that way either. Ms. Hill seems to have been a difficult and dangerous Woman indeed (and if, like Siegel and myself, you like that kind of Woman, you really owe it to yourself to see this movie - Annette Bening is fantastic throughout), but while She was obviously a big influence on Siegel, he seems to have come up with most of his ideas all by himself. the movie's also nicely balanced: it's about equal parts suspenseful gangster tale, accurate historical piece, and engaging love story. scenes from the movie were running through my mind for hours after watching it. i'd buy it in a heartbeat if iTunes sold it; they don't, so i'll buy it elsewhere.
