An family from Ireland move to NY hoping to forget the loss of a son. A tad too dramatic at times, but the comedy and emotions play well. The plot hits all the typical points yet slides by with the help of the acting.

I have viewed this beautifully done film twice. It is an incredible story of human strength and the power of love. The children are radiant in their roles. Samantha Morton and Paddy Considine are excellent as the struggling couple desperately trying to make a better life for their family despite a tragic circumstance. An outstanding film!

Everything about this film: the screenplay, the direction, the acting... superb. This is one of the greatest films you will ever watch in your life. It's on my Top Ten list right up there with "The Godfather," "Citizen Kane," "Annie Hall," and other time-tested classics. It's about love, hope, and dreams. It's about overcoming tragedy and celebrating life. It's also about how great America is... even in a rough neighborhood like Hell's Kitchen. As for the two young girls... I have never before seen "child actors" so brilliantly doing their jobs. Truly incredible performances. Only an 89% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes? Are you serious? Proof positive that American journalists are clueless.

Cutest. Girls. Ever. And the other reviewers are correct: it's not a romance. It's a family drama with laughter and tears and transformation.

Not a romance... but one of the best movies you'll ever watch!
  • Intimate Emotional Masterpiece

This is a movie that left me emotionally drained and inspired. Applied to today's silliness about how unwelcome immigrants are, it has a powerful message of struggle, hope and the real America that has been lost in misled patriotism.

This is one of my favorites. It's a sweet story about a family of modern-day Irish immigrants who move to NYC illegally to escape their unfortunate past. The movie is really about the father, but Sheridan makes the wise move of telling it through the eyes of the oldest daughter,an intelligent 11-year-old who records everything around her with her camcorder. It's hard to talk about the plot without giving anything away, but I'll put it this way:I don't like human dramas, but I love this one.The writing is smart, the acting is wonderful, and the direction is clever.Try it out and see if you agree.

I was somewhat hesitant to rent this movie based on the description but I am so glad I did. Beautifully scripted, acted and directed. These are the kind of movies that should be in the theaters. Life and marraige are difficult and this movie tackles the complexities with grace. Thoroughly entertaining.
