Description

Landmark movie in the film noir tradition, Roman Polanski's Chinatown stands as a true screen classic. Jack Nicholson is private eye Jake Gittes, living off the murky moral climate of sunbaked, pre-war Southern California. Hired by a beautiful socialite (Faye Dunaway) to investigate her husband's extra-marital affair, Gittes is swept into a maelstrom of double dealings and deadly deceits, uncovering a web of personal and political scandals that come crashing together for one, unforgettable night in...Chinatown. Co-starring film legend John Huston and featuring an Academy Award-winning script by Robert Towne, Chinatown captures a lost era in a masterfully woven movie that remains a timeless gem.

when I saw this movie decades ago, I had no idea that the director was and still is a convicted child molester, not to mention fugitive from justice. I'm aware of his past, survivor of the Nazi Holocaust, widower and father of an unborn child both murdered by psychopaths, but I cannot and will not contribute to his 'fortune' by purchasing this movie. For the life of me I cannot understand how an unrepentant child rapist has avoided capture for so many years and how so many people give him a 'pass' and continue to work with him, knowing what he has admitted to and was convicted of.

An extraordinary movie. Jack Nicholson at his absolute best. Faye Dunaway at her absolute best. John Huston - the most inspired and despicable casting ever. An elegant score. The best use of LA as a set - beautiful and ugly, evil and seductive. God, I love this movie. Polanski never equaled it. Not even close. This is what Raymond Chandler wanted to write but never did.
