Description

"The Zulus are coming. " So Dark Sevier, a local DJ for public radio in Butte, Montana, announces to listeners one evening in May 2017. By this point, everyone in the small town had been eagerly following the strange and curious series of events that would eventually bring a Zulu prince from Nongoma, South Africa, to their town of 30, 000-some-odd people. Initially thought to be something along the lines of a Nigerian e-mail scam, what actually transpires becomes a monumental moment for a cross-cultural exchange. Set against the backdrop of turmoil and divisiveness in the Age of Trump, Zulu Summer reaffirms the value of humanity's common ground. This story, about people from opposite sides of the planet coming together in an attempt to understand and learn from one another, is both vital and urgent in our current global landscape.

I caught this flick at the world premiere in Santa Barbara - and I was stoked to see that it's now being released here. Pre-ordered and ready to give this another view, and invite all my friends too. We need more documentaries like this - films that both make you feel good about humanity and the world around you, and also spark up conversations between different types of people who might not normally communicate. I won't give anything away about this movie, but check it out. You will not regret it! In these really divided times in America, this is exactly what we all need.

I was lucky enough to catch Zulu Summer at it's premiere in the hometown where it was filmed- Butte Montana! Talk about a 4D experience, where one of the Zulus was there in person, and people who were in the movie, showed up to watch themselves. To see everyday American folks welcome these Zulus guys into their town was not only interesting, but very emotionally moving. I was left inspired, happy and teary-eyed! Check it out.
