Watched twice, overall good message. Wanted it to be a romance but real message landed stronger because of love for the main characters.

Not only was the story amazing. But the mix of rich personality in so few words from each character gave a description of strength all around. The only thing that took away from the awsome climax was the ending (Justice did not prevail). But good movie overall!

I was probably expecting to much from this movie. Predictable and disappointing. Spend your time watching something else.

This movie was so wonderful from the word go. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was real, and there was so much love throughout the movie. Not just from the couple at the center of the plot, but just love from family and even from a few strangers. I highly recommend this movie..

....but for the scoring/soundtrack The movie is needlessly long. There is very plot or character development. The story has no arc, and the characters lack depth or complexity. The message once again tells a narrative of black subjugation. It is sad that that period was selected, when there was a time of flourishing for Black culture. If I am honest, I did not initially intend to watch the film. But, it was free on Hulu, and I could not sleep. Still, I think that I would have preferred to watch the back of my eyelids. There would have been more plot development. The trailer makes the film seem compelling. It isn’t. Regina King was sweet and endearing—but an Oscar? I thought there needed to be acting. There just was not much there. ***********pregnancy rant*********** Also, the parts about the pregnancy...like morning sickness that begins in the second or third trimester? Debilitating baby kicks? I have never heard of such things. I guess it’s possible that this girl drew the shortest straw. There are enough poopy things that happen during pregnancy that those lower probability things needn’t be played up. She was on her feet all day. Swollen ankles? Meanwhile, the delivery looked effortless. The protagonist just sat up and grabbed her baby. Again, I have never heard of such things. You don’t have to @me if you have. Just saying.... *************rant complete************* Well, not quite. There is a conflict scene where so many improbable things happen. One, the people were simultaneously biting their tongue and rude in a way that was completely unbelievable. Second, one of the women use an epithet that Black people just don’t use—certainly not during that period. It was clearly added to convey emotional content to a “broader” audience—but it made the whole scene improbable. Plus, the threats and the holy rollers...just, huh? Oh, and what is with the very obvious camera angles that are as subtle as an elbow to the rib: look guys, 3 generations. I don’t usually review films. I really don’t want to tear this man’s work apart(I am a sensitive artist, too!), but it was unnecessarily long and tedious. To be fair, there are beautiful camera shots, great attention to detail as far as setting and props.
  • Disappointing

This movie is tedious, uninteresting, and not very well-acted. It’s about love and social injustice, but it doesn’t tell us anything new about either one. Unimpressive.

This movie is a slow paced film but it works in my opinion. It also has a strong cast and a beautiful score. Definitely worth watching at least once.
