Description

After marrying a successful Parisian writer known commonly as "Willy" (Dominic West), Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette (Keira Knightley) is transplanted from her childhood home in rural France to the intellectual and artistic splendor of Paris. Soon after, Willy convinces Colette to ghostwrite for him. She pens a semi-autobiographical novel about a witty and brazen country girl named Claudine, sparking a bestseller and a cultural sensation. After its success, Colette and Willy become the talk of Paris and their adventures inspire additional Claudine novels. Colette's fight over creative ownership and gender roles drives her to overcome societal constraints, revolutionizing literature, fashion and sexual expression.

I was captivated from start to finish. Knightly dazzles as the creative genius Colette. The role showcases her ability to bring a fleshed-out character to life, one that keeps the audience invested. At about 2 hours in length, the film moved at a pleasant pace, not dwelling too long on certain plot points. The costumes, cinematography, and script are all fabulous, but again, Knightly is the star, always outshining what surrounds her. This film is great for anyone interested in period pieces featuring a strong female lead.

This sumptuous period piece tracks the rise of a provocative writer in the early 20th century. But the film has surprising contemporary relevance in its exploration of marriage, identity, and the nature of celebrity culture. Keira Knightley and Dominic West are outstanding, and the director shows great sensitivity toward the material.

Gorgeous. However, I disregarded the reviews that said it was preachy--toward the end, it stalls, rubbing one's nose in this particular definition of liberation.
  • A depiction of the struggles of Artistry.

Truly an amazing piece of cinema. A or an insight into oppression. Who is the author or director of the film, where does one pull inspiration from. Trying to control what we write, movements and thoughts.
