Description

Shot outside Pittsburgh on a shoestring budget by a band of filmmakers determined to make their mark, Night of the Living Dead, directed by horror master George A. Romero, is one of the great stories of independent cinema: a midnight hit turned box-office smash that became one of the most influential films of all time. A deceptively simple tale of a group of strangers trapped in a farmhouse who find themselves fending off a horde of recently dead, flesh-eating ghouls, Romero’s claustrophobic vision of a late-1960s America literally tearing itself apart rewrote the rules of the horror genre, combined gruesome gore with acute social commentary, and quietly broke ground by casting a black actor (Duane Jones) in its lead role. Stark, haunting, and more relevant than ever, Night of the Living Dead is back.

  • Still pretty creepy!

Its less about zombies than the unpredictable behavior of 7 desperate humans trapped in a house. The news reporting feels eerily realistic. Duane Jones is a solid lead - it's a shame he only did 6 more films.

The is, hands down, the absolute best quality version of this film on iTunes. It definitely looks better than The Weinstein Company’s version and Cinedigm’s color version. Criterion made it a point to truly restore this film from its original prints for a very clean, high-definition picture. This film is still excellent and very creepy, but I’m only giving this 4 stars because this iTunes version doesn’t include any iTunes Extras from Criterion’s Blu-ray of this remastering. The discs includes a whole new second cut of the film called Night Of Anubis, which was assembled from the film’s original work-prints, as well as tons of other extras. However, I do think that it is nice to have a convenient copy of this film for my Apple TV, so there’s that. Now, if only we could finally get the original Dawn Of The Dead from 1979 on iTunes.
  • Criterion: Include the extras please

I know this is half the price of the Blu-ray, but honestly, Criterion is all about the extras. It is awesome to have a beautiful cleaned up print, but this release is particularly meant for all those who have suffered from viewing washed out public domain terrible resolution prints. This target audience deserves all the amazing extras that Criterion has produced to complement this fab’s dream release.
