Description

Set in the glamour of the 1950’s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) are at the center of the British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock. Women come and go through Woodcock’s life until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by the scariest curse of all…love. And so begins a Gothic Romance of twists, turns and power struggles of “pure, delicious pleasure” (Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian) that is “devilishly funny and luxuriantly sensuous” (Dana Stevens, Slate).

  • Loved it!

Really liked this movie. Loved the characters. The setting. The photography. Also loved the bizarre twist in the story towards the end. This film is not for everyone. If you expect car chases and a high body count then forget this one. It’s cerebral to an extent. Which I liked.
  • Okay but not for everyone

The pitch for this story could be handled in two sentences. This is a very slow-paced film that, in its method and execution, makes you feel the characters' realities. It has an interesting and odd twist. The average viewer will hate this film. Intellectuals may watch it once. It's an okay film but it is more like looking at a picture than watching a film. I like intelligent fare, but this does not have enough substance to impress me.
  • Daniel Day-Lewis goes out on low note

Pure crap. Couldn't even finish it. A self-obsessed creative type with OCD (that's orginal) is normalized by poison administered by his lover with the tacit approval of his live-in sister. Super.
  • Boring, Dull

I thougt this was going to be a good movie, nope. Instead it was boring, boring & boring. Kept waiting for something to happen to justify the money paid out for it, nope. And this was Day Lewis's last movie? He should not go out on this. Oh,..... and....it..... was..... boring.

The acting (Lewis, Krieps, Manville), the lush overlay of the soundtrack by polymath Jonny Greenwood, the cinematography and direction (PTA), all top-notch, detailed, studied, and well-appointed. A masterwork.

A good double bill to “the secretary”. Some people need a little bit of perversion to stay together Very beautifully made and acted
  • Honest But Uncompelling

Phantom Thread offers a frightening yet honest insight into how desperately some women need men and the lengths to which they will go to get what they want. But even Daniel Day-Lewis’s mesmerizing performance isn’t enough to save the sterile, confusing plot.
