Description

The extraordinary true story of an unexpected friendship in the later years of Queen Victoria's (Academy Award® winner Judi Dench) remarkable rule. When Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal), a young clerk, travels from India to participate in the Queen's Golden Jubilee, he is surprised to find favor with the Queen herself. As the Queen questions the constrictions of her long-held position, the two forge an unlikely and devoted alliance with a loyalty to one another that her household and inner circle all attempt to destroy. As the friendship deepens, the Queen begins to see a changing world through new eyes and joyfully reclaims her humanity.

Making a movie romanticizing a colonial empire and its leader and the colonial subject that serves her without ever bringing this very issue up? I'm an -American- and I was offended by even the trailer. Abdul himself is never given the agency and development that she is. It's just one orientalist fantasy.

Judi Dench was absolutly SUPURB. I've really hated so many movies lately, including that joke, The Shape of Water, but this I just loved. Worth purchasing for sure. Dench is warm and salty and her relationship w/ Abdul is just pure and real.

Great movie. Very interesting. Something different. Why such lousy reviews?

She has made me hate her and love her at the same time in some of her character rolls. She has always been one saucy Brit to me. I love the portrayal of one of the best queens besides our current saucy reigning royal herself. But I like the indifference that they show on the screen and how it was for Abdul to serve the queen. It was heart felt and sometimes funny. Definitely an untold story that needed a little light on it.

such a weird combination of a few sweet moment with sick comedy. way below Judi Dench. what the British empire did to India is made trite. there are several quite well known actors in this movie and they must have all needed money.

It’s a part of history that wasn’t in the textbooks. And I like Dame Dench as well!
