Description

A riveting World War II thriller that is filled with espionage and romance in equal measure, The Exception follows German soldier Stefan Brandt (Jai Courtney) as he goes on a mission to investigate exiled German Monarch Kaiser Wilhelm II (Christopher Plummer). The Kaiser lives in Huis Doorn, a secluded mansion just outside of Utretcht in the Netherlands, and as Germany is taking over Holland, the country’s authorities are concerned that Dutch spies may be watching the Kaiser. As Brandt begins to infiltrate the Kaiser’s life in search of clues, he finds himself drawn into an unexpected and passionate romance with Mieke (Lily James), one of the Kaiser’s maids whom Brandt soon discovers is secretly Jewish. When Heinrich Himmler (Eddie Marsan), Head of the SS, makes an unexpected visit with a large platoon of Nazis in tow, the stage is set for a breathtaking showdown, as secrets are revealed, allegiances are tested, and Brandt is forced to make the ultimate choice between honoring his country and following his heart.

I have no complaints about the acting, but that can’t save a movie that’s plainly written. I don’t know how these reviews can say it was an action, tense, thriller. It had about 30 min. Of entertaining content. The rest was just boring.

This wonderful entertainment will likely not bore you for a moment! Christopher Plummer portrays a delightful Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany in exile in Holland during WWII. A Jewish maid employed by the Kaiser and a Nazi Captain begin a "romance". Fine acting, implausible perhaps! Just enjoy it!

Weak script and story that could have been good. No tension in this thriller. Forgettable except for frontal nudity. Sad when you see a film that should have been better.

I concur with the RT review blurbs from AO Scott (NYT), Peter DeBruge (Variety), and Kenneth Turan (LAT). WWII romantic thriller with excellent performances and a nice bit of historicity about Germany’s political scene around the former Kaiser Wilhelm. Fun-to-watch seems an odd way to describe a yarn around mid-20th c. German nationalism and racism, but the overall setting of the film, the intrusion of live-in Nazi’s on the regal estate of a still vibrant and storytelling Kaiser Wilhelm in an attempt to protect themselves against any domestic or foreign interest in reinstating or influence-peddling the Kaiser against the nightmare of Hitler, is a solid formula for a foreboding intrigue-plot that is well executed by this production and its players.

Then again he was one of the few good things about suicide squad, which isn't saying much
