Description

One of the most talented, influential, and iconoclastic filmmakers of all time, Brian De Palma’s career started in the 60s and has included such acclaimed and diverse films as Carrie, Dressed to Kill, Blow Out, Scarface, The Untouchables, Carlito’s Way, and Mission: Impossible. In this lively, illuminating and unexpectedly moving documentary, directors Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow engage in a personal and candid discussion with De Palma, exploring not only his life and work but also his singular approach to the craft of filmmaking and his remarkable experiences navigating the film business, from his early days as the bad boy of New Hollywood to his more recent years as a respected veteran of the field. In the end, what emerges is a funny, honest, and incisive portrait of a truly one-of-a-kind artist, and an exhilarating behind-the-scenes look at the last 50 years of the film industry through the eyes of someone who has truly seen it all.

I was so looking forward to this and think its invaluable film history. However its edited horribly! NON stop talking from De Palma. I mean not even a pause, a breath, a second to digest. its just all these clips smashed together and him talking literally without ever pausing ever. (presumably this was not how the natural conversation went) but the way they edited this makes it just exhausting to watch and hard to digest everything.

Major fan for decades. This doc is welcome, but horribly edited. A single interview subject and all talk is not the problem. No sense of cadence is. Run on-run on-run on-run on... It barrels into new films, subjects without so much as a breath! This has the effect of the audience tuning out. Precisely what De Palma's visual style could never do. Had it not been directed by hacks (over-rated non-movie silliness posing as films in the one case) it would not have suffered from this incredible annoyance. And it is a shallow no point of view doc. Anybody could have made this. It was very, very easy what they did. It's all Brian just telling stories about his films and life. There is no editorial intelligence whatsoever.

Overall it's fun to listen to De Palma's telling about his filmmaking experiences, and also his opinions about Hollywood. As a documentary it's very shallow, and you can't take much into account on De Palma's background, since the whole doc is De Palma speaking to someone in front of a camera.

I'm a huge De Palma fan and this was an incredibly interesting film to watch. De Palma has a number of interesting anecdotes as he goes though his own filmography but what I found most interesting is him grappling with his later work and comparing how others percieved aspects of his films to what he was going for and the compromises he had to take. You see someone explain his brilliance but also trying to make films that would connect with audiences. This film gives us valuable insight into understanding the process of one of our greatest filmmakers.
