Description

The State of Marriage is the epic story of how legal legend Mary Bonauto partnered with small-town Vermont lawyers Beth Robinson and Susan Murray in a 2-decade struggle that built the foundation for the entire marriage equality movement. From winning groundbreaking LGBT legal recognition for same sex couples in 2000, to becoming the first state to enact same sex marriage through a dramatic legislative vote in 2009, the film shows in a very personal way how, as HRC national field director Marty Rouse says, “Beth, Susan and Mary really changed the course of American history.”

  • Equality from VT to US

Don't miss this movie! It's literally family-friendly. We still have a long way to go toward comprehensive equality, but this critically important step in protecting families was launched in Vermont. This is a deeply personal and even entertaining and funny story that led to an expansion in civil rights. I live in Vermont my husband and I volunteered and worked in this movement. But this well-told story is universal.

This is an excellent documentary that not only delves into the Supreme Court case that finally opened the United States for marriage equality but takes a poignant look at the couple that fought for the right to be acknowledged. A great balance between the love story and the fight for legal recognition.

At a time when there has been so much progress it is important to look back and remember how difficult it was to create change. This movie not only highlights the tireless efforts of courageous individuals but reminds us to not take for granted how much progress has been made. I loved this movie and if I could give it more stars than five I would. The State of Marriage is part of our history and highly recommend it!
