I grew up on a cattle ranch. The character of those who preceeded me was what the cowboy culture was all about, and ultimately, why it became so popular. Elmer Kelton's father was a genuine cowboy, and Elmer's books reflect the reality of being just that. Tommy Lee Jones captures this tale in a well produced, directed, and exceptionally well acted reproduction of what I feel was one of Kelton's very best tales. If you truly enjoy the character of our early cowboy lore, you will thoroughly enjoy this movie. You won't be able to watch it just once. This is simply a film that will stay with you.
