Description

Directed with clinical precision by Academy Award® winner Robert Wise, this compelling account of the earth’s first biological crisis is perhaps the most chillingly realistic science fiction thriller ever made. After an errant satellite crashes to Earth near a remote New Mexico village, the recovery team discovers that almost everyone in the town are victims of a horrible death, with the mysterious exception of an infant and an old homeless man. The survivors are brought to a state-of-the-art laboratory descending five stories beneath the ground where the puzzled scientists race against time to determine the nature of the deadly microbe before it wreaks worldwide havoc. A trailblazer in the areas of special effects and inventive sets, The Andromeda Strain is based on Michael Crichton's best-selling novel that created national paranoia for its topical relevance to the first moon landing.

Who gives a steaming pile of crap about the 71 version? I want to see modern technology, not something that you laugh at.
  • It's the realism that makes it work

This movie is methodical, STILL fascinating 35 years later, and strives to be a realistic, entertaining look at how we might confront an extraterrestrial biological hazard. If you don't have the attention-span to appreciate this film for what it is, go back to your video games.
  • A classic

I love the mood and pacing. One of my favorite old sci-fi movies along with Forbidden Planet and Logan's Run. I was worried the movie was cropped to 4:3, but fear not. It is widescreen, not full-screen as stated in the movie details.
  • Sorry but it was boring

I read the book and the book was good. The book seemed more exciting than this movie version. The movie kept pretty true to the book but the acting was atrocious. It really seemed dated. I had to skip throughout the movie to keep from sleeping. I am hoping that the mini series is better. It seemed more exciting from the trailers.

I'd like to watch it, I'd love to watch a lot of these old Sci Fi movies. But I just can't pay $10 for these. Apple really needs to look at it's pricing.

Yes, this movie is slow paced. Yes, this movie is very minimalist. There are no giant robots or aliens. Nobody's head explodes. There are no zombies. There are no CG effects. There are no second rate pop stars posing as actors. But it is fascinating to watch. I saw it when I was very young and never quite got it out of my head. I watch it every few years and am still fascinated by it. It is one of those movies that would never get made today, which makes it unique.

For its day this movie was a classic. Sure the technology has long since been made obsolete, but the story definately carries it. If you are rating this movie low wait 20 years and then look at movies you still love.
  • What an impact!

I remember when I first saw this movie. I was taken with the possibility that this could happen! Pretend, for a moment, that a satellite crashes and, for whatever reason, all life in the area appears to have died. "What happened?" would be the first thing in all of our minds. This film works on this idea and takes it forward. A team is sent in and discovers...well, that would be telling. Let us just say that experts go into what they think is a special exercise and learn a lot more than they are ready for. Very forward thinking for its time...and the super-70's feel is appropriate for 1970.
